Grub restoration (Opensolaris/Nexenta)

What do you do if you have a kernel panic/incessant reboots due to your bad luck and then one not so fine time you will realize that your machine wont boot anymore.

Meaning,it will enter the grub mode as soon as you boot the bare metal. This is a case of faulty grub and you will have to reinstall it.

Easiest way, well here goes..(This is out of my experience today so you can be sure it will work)

Insert the live cd and boot into the disk

  1. #zpool import (You need to find the disk number something like c0d0s0,note it down). Lets call this number as ‘disk no’
  2. cd /<path to your livecd>/boot/grub
  3. installgrub stage1 stage2 /dev/rdsk/<disk no>
  4. reboot

And your ready to go.

Hope it helps … certainly did for me 🙂
